If you have sensitive teeth ice cream, iced sodas, a hot coffee or even cold air can cause a painful reaction in your teeth. Dentists say that tooth sensitivity is one of the most common complaints from their patients.
What causes sensitive teeth
The visible portion of a tooth is covered by a strong layer of enamel, while the roots are protected by cementum, which is not as as hard as enamel. Enamel and cementum protect the dentin which is the inner and softer layer of the tooth.
Whenever a tooth’s enamel or cementum does not fully cover the dentin, hot or cold drinks and foods can cause nerve irritation which is the short and sharp pain you feel.
The source of tooth sensitivity can be a variety of causes: a cracked tooth, a leaky filling, tooth decay, but also enemel erosion through acidic foods and drinks, aggressive brushing or grinding of teeth. Another common cause are receding gums which can be caused by periodontitis.
If you suffer from sensitive teeth you should first consult your dentist. If your dentist cannot identify any cause for your pain, then you might want to consider a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. They help to protect the dentin by blocking nerve-enriched tubules with specific ingredients.
